Second Eyes

Constructive, focused feedback
and a voiceprint of your work in progress

Second Eyes constructive critique is here to help throughout your Author’s Journey. We’ll share our perspective on what’s working best and let you know what could enhance the work in progress.

The Author's Journey

Plot, premise, character development, and backstory

Let’s find and build on the best of your ideas, notes, and character sketches. A solid premise will support an engrossing plot and characters the reader will care about. A well-refined plot theme sets the course of your novel from your lead character’s first challenge to the destination.

Second Eyes will review any documents you choose to send as you plan and shape your novel. We’ll let you know our perspective on what will keep pages turning and advise you of anything that might cause the reader to skim. We’ll share specific ideas and suggestions to consider as your characters come to life and the plot progresses to a conclusion.

High-level and detailed outlines

Congratulations on being a plotter, not a pantser. In building (or planning to build) an outline for your novel, you have joined the ranks of J.K. Rowling, William Faulkner, Joseph Heller, and Norman Mailer. On the other hand, Stephen King is a notorious pantser who has managed to write a few novels, allowing his characters to steer the plot.

Plotters know that a well-crafted outline will reveal how the plot progresses, taking your central characters from one challenge to the next and a final resolution.

In a Second Eyes review of your outline, we’ll share specific ideas and suggestions to develop each compelling event and to bring greater depth to the characters as you, the author, steer their destinies.

First draft and revisions

Is it time for a new perspective on your novel? If you set your work aside, the narrative will evolve in a desk drawer. That will give you a fresh perspective.

Another perspective is available from Second Eyes. We read each work-in-progress excerpt at least twice. Our first read will be from start to finish, then we reread each page, identifying pivotal events and dialogue that best distinguish the central characters. Our review will reveal where the reader’s attention might waver — and help you, as the author, deepen the story’s impact.

Query letter, synopsis, and elevator pitch

You’ve put in the work and told the tale, so now it’s time to connect with the reading public.

An agent and publisher can make the connection, or you might self-publish. Either way, marketing puts the book into libraries and store shelves, then into the hands of your readers.

When reviewing your marketing materials, Second Eyes Editorial will highlight what communicates the best and advise ways to fill any gaps. Our feedback will advise on format, content, and voice that will be compelling to the agents and publishers in your genre.
